Preternology is the discipline of study emerging from within the Astronist philosophy of religion dealing with the study of abilities and miracles attributed to religious founders and religious figures. In the wider context of Astronism itself, preternology deals with the study of all the supernatural and preternatural elements of Astronism. Cometan was the first to coin the term and specialists in the field are referred to as preternologists.
Cometan classified religious abilities and miracles into three categories:
-
Naturalism – normal, mundane abilities practicable by all.
-
Preternaturalism – abnormal abilities achievable by only few that are not necessarily contrary to nature.
-
Supernaturalism – abilities contrary to the laws of nature.
